Finger Feeding

Ever since Moxie pointed me to this Dutch study on baby self-feeding, I’ve been hugely in love with the idea of introducing Pickle to finger foods. I never imagined that the hard part would be getting him interested. (more…)

Never Wake a Sleeping Baby?

I am about to do something stupid.

We were out running errands and came home about an hour later than the Pickle’s regular afternoon naptime. I’d been counting on him falling asleep while we were out and taking his nap on the run, but it didn’t work out that way, and so instead of going down at 3:30, he went down at 4:30 when we came home.

Now it’s 5:45 and he’s still asleep. Normally an extra-long nap would be cause for celebration, but this one is threatening to encroach on bedtime. Which means I’m about to break the cardinal rule of parenthood and wake him up so he’ll have time to eat and play and bathe and still go to bed more or less on time.

He’s gonna be pissed.

Oh well. Wish me luck!

[Update: He was actually awake and playing with the zipper on his sleepsack when I went in, just not making any noise. So all was well in the house of Pickle.]

Sleeping Like A Baby

Has any cliche made new parents laugh as wryly as the phrase “sleeping like a baby”? That mythical peaceful untroubled sleep…are there any babies who really sleep like that? That is, for more than 4 hours at a time? (There’s some comedian or movie which finished that line with “…I woke up every 2 hours crying for my mother.” It’s funny because it’s true!)

The Pickle goes to sleep easily - for that I’m thankful - but oh dear lord do I ever wish he’d stay asleep easily too! I haven’t slept more than 5 continuous hours in 6 months, and it’s seriously starting to take its toll.

If this article on sleep is accurate, I’ve regressed cognitively to approximately the level of a 3 year-old by now. Which I’m thinking makes me unqualified to care for a 6-month old, let alone hold down a full time job. Ah, well. (more…)

Have Baby, Will Travel

This past weekend, I travelled with baby and husband in tow to Cincinnati for my grandfather’s funeral. Funerals being what they are, we had only about 12 hours to book the tickets, pack, and head to the airport. Having never flown with a baby before, it was a steep learning curve. (more…)

Because I’m cheap and lazy

I breastfeed and cloth diaper because I’m cheap and lazy. There, I said it. The other benefits are just gravy.

I read somewhere that the average parent will spend $3000 on disposable diapers by the time their baby is potty-trained. And that’s for each baby. I’ve spent just about $600 on diapers in the past 6 months (happy half-birthday, Pickle!) and expect to come in at well under $1000 when we’re through. The premium-sized prefolds we use now will fit him until he’s a toddler, so all I have to buy from here on out are covers. And probably a few pockets or AIOs here and there to round out the stash - one does need a few grandparent-and-babysitter-friendly diapers around, after all. Hmm, maybe the real reason I cloth diaper is so I can have a virtuous excuse to shop online… (more…)

Introductions

Well, this is it - I’ve officially become a Mommy Blogger.

I don’t expect this site to attract anything like the readership of Ask Moxie, Parenthacks, or Offsprung. Hell, I don’t even really expect it to attract as much traffic as my Livejournal.

So why do it at all?

Well, because I, like so many other Mommies out here on the interwebs, have a lot to say about my kid and need somewhere to put it all.

First of all, he’s really friggin’ cute. Like, absurdly so. And I say that without any bias whatsoever. (Yeah, right…)

Secondly, he can do ALL SORTS OF AWESOME THINGS. Like sitting up! And eating food! And babbling “blablablablabla” over and over and over! He’s a SUPER GENIUS BABY and the world needs to know all about him.

Plus, I have Opinions. Important Opinions About Things. And also Stuff.

So that’s me, in a nutshell. Welcome to my blog!
