I am so glad this worked for you & the pickle. It didn't for us (with #1 - we were too traumatized by it to even try with #2, who would probably have been more open to it), but I am glad it does for some. A reminder that, as in all things, YBMV.

In this month's Brain, Child Magazine, vaccination was the cover story. A sort of leaning one way perspective, but also some balance.

I think it's very telling that all of the NICU docs and PICU docs I've encountered have been hugely pro-vaccines. These folks are much less worried about herd immunity and more worried about the health of my critters since they spent so much time making sure that my critters would survive. They all said, 'Yeah there are risks, but there are bigger risks the other direction and your critter is a fragile enough creature that [insert disease] would be terrible."

Thank you for saying this.

No one wants to put their child at risk. But there it is: don't put children at risk. Saying "there's no measles/mumps/whatever in our area, so why risk it?" is a very shortsighted view.

It is good to ask questions, but - seriously? - measles, whooping cough, and more making a comeback in this country in the 21st century is ridiculous.

Kat, I'd forgotten about BPA - good point. Bottled spring water's probably a better option.

And Karen, thanks for the Skype tip! (Hooray for trackbacks!)

The easiest fix would be to switch from powdered formula to premixed, which is prepared with unflouridated water. The major downsides to that are premixed formula doesn’t keep nearly as long as the powdered stuff, and is REALLY FUCKING EXPENSIVE. But probably still cheaper than investing in a reverse osmosis filter.

But also the RTF formula also has more BPA.

Could you get unflorinated bottled water?

You'll get better luck getting through to Dr. Mike if you call in your question on his SKYPE line! :) Those questions usually get put to the top of the list to answer. :)

Just a little inside hint! :)

zomg Jessica - our fun favorite story is when the sprog chewed off a hunk of a cardboard baby book and almost choked on it. No teeth. We're in the same room. Watching her. I could almost swear she timed it... despite my guilt reflex. Enough with the jokes about how our kid devours books, ok people?

Oh, and the one where she hid a refrigerator letter magnet under her changing pad and then, when I asked "where did it go?? did you eat it??" nodded. The pediatrician asked what letter it was (a lower case 'i') and said we had a 50% chance of it passing straight through, so call in an hour. hmph.

ways they try to kill us, I say.

My parents told me that they never appreciated their dog quite so much as the first time they took Baby Me out to eat at a restaurant.

Maybe we should get a dog...
